Today, Alaska Ship and Drydock announced its intention to transition its business and assets to Vigor Industrial, an industry leader in shipbuilding with yards in Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Bremerton and Port Angeles.  This is good news for Ketchikan and Southeast Alaska.  Combining these two companies will place the Ketchikan Shipyard in an even better position to secure a large share of emerging marine industrial opportunities in the North Pacific and Arctic Oceans.   The added financial and production capacity provided by this acquisition will strengthen Alaska Ship and Drydock’s competitive position for new shipbuilding in Ketchikan.

Under the ownership of Vigor Industrial, the new Alaska Ship and Drydock LLC will continue to work toward full implementation of the Ketchikan Shipyard Development Plan and is retaining the Ketchikan Shipyard Development staff.  I have also been assured that, other than ownership, there will be little or no change for the existing employees or the operations of the company.  Furthermore, this transition will not impact any of Alaska Ship and Drydock’s existing or pending contracts with the Alaska Marine Highway System.

As the owner of the Ketchikan Shipyard where Alaska Ship and Drydock is based, the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) will need to approve the transition agreement.  I anticipate that after AIDEA has performed its due diligence review of Vigor Industrial’s financial and operating capacity that they will sanction this transition at their next board meeting on February 29.
