28th Alaska Legislature Convenes

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell congratulates Senator Stedman after administering the oath of office.

The first session of the 28th Alaska Legislature convened last week in Juneau. My staff and I are back in the Capitol and busy working to represent the residents of Southeast Alaska. This session, I will serve as the Chairman of the Health and Social Services Committee in addition to being a member of the Education Committee and the Labor and Commerce Committee.  I will also continue in my role as Chairman of The Energy Council which is a legislative organization consisting of members from 12 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, and the country of Venezuela. The council’s mission is to provide a forum where leaders can exchange ideas, best practices and sound solutions on vital energy issues that affect Alaska, the nation, and the Western Hemisphere.

Meet the Staff

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Senator Stedman, Julie Isom, Christie Jamieson and Darwin Peterson

I have always been fortunate to have excellent staff working in my office on your behalf.  This year I am pleased to announce a new member of my staff, Christie Jamieson from Wrangell. She is a life-long “Wrangellite” with a professional municipal government background.  In July of 2012, Christie retired from the City and Borough of Wrangell after serving the public for 32 years, 15 of which were as Borough Clerk.  She is presently the Vice-President of the Wrangell Chamber of Commerce.  Christie will assist me with community and constituent relations, public communications and research.
She joins Darwin Peterson who has worked in my office for the last six years. In addition to being my chief of staff, Darwin will staff the Health and Social Services Committee.  Also returning this year is Julie Isom. A resident of Ketchikan, Julie is entering her seventh year as my office manager.

Redistricting Results in New District Q

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

It has been an honor to represent the residents of District A in the legislature since first being appointed to the Senate in 2003.  This year, I will represent District Q which has new boundaries due to the decennial redistricting process that occurs following the federal census.  As a result, I will no longer represent my friends in Petersburg and Kupreanof but I will continue to represent the communities of Ketchikan, Sitka, Wrangell, Thorne Bay, Saxman, Coffman Cove, Hollis, Pelican, Port Alexander, Elfin Cove, Point Baker and Meyers Chuck.  I want to extend a warm welcome to the new communities in my district: Haines, Craig, Metlakatla, Klawock, Hoonah, Kake, Angoon, Hydaburg, Naukati, Klukwan, Hyder, Kasaan, Port Protection, Edna Bay and Whale Pass.

My Priorities

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Even though my district boundaries have changed, my priorities have not.  I will continue to work diligently to support energy generation and distribution opportunities.  Additional investment in energy infrastructure is key to improving our economy and quality of life by lowering the cost of living for families as well as keeping and attracting healthy businesses in our region. A major number of jobs in Southeast depend on sustainable industries in fishing, timber, mining, tourism and maritime technology.  A central focus of my work in the legislature is to provide targeted incentives, access to resources and affordable energy to ensure these industries are competitive and strong.  Providing reliable transportation infrastructure is another top priority of mine.  This includes new ferries to replace our aging fleet, maintaining our airports and harbors and building roads to access our natural resources.  My other top priorities include providing a quality public education system for our children, creating safe communities, preserving our unique culture and exercising fiscal discipline.
