I would like to congratulate Owen Fulton from Sitka who made the state finals for the Poetry Out Loud (POL) competition. POL is a National Recitation Contest promoted by the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council. The competition, presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Through Poetry Out Loud, students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. Owen Fulton took first place in Sitka before advancing to the state competition. On March 11th ten high school students from around the state participated in this event at the KTOO studio in Juneau.

Owen Fulton, 17 years old, has been a resident of Sitka since 2000 and is a very active member of his community. He is a member of the Sitka High School symphonic and jazz bands, plays seven different instruments and teaches violin lessons. Owen participates in Drama, Debate and Forensics (DDF) and has qualified for the State competition twice in his high school career. He is a junior this year, and president of the Sitka High Student Council. This is Owen’s first year participating in Poetry Out Loud.
