{"id":990,"date":"2010-10-07T16:30:21","date_gmt":"2010-10-08T00:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=990"},"modified":"2010-11-24T15:41:33","modified_gmt":"2010-11-25T00:41:33","slug":"northern-waters-task-force-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=990","title":{"rendered":"Northern Waters Task Force Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Northern-Waters-Meeting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-991\" title=\"Northern Waters Meeting\" src=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Northern-Waters-Meeting-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a>Friday I attended the first meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.housemajority.org\/coms\/index.php?c=104\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Northern Waters Task Force<\/a> in Anchorage.\u00a0\u00a0 The task force was formed to coordinate state and federal interests resulting from the opening of arctic waters.\u00a0 The group will work to put Alaska at the forefront of U.S. Arctic Policy, addressing issues of transportation, national security, and resource development.\u00a0 The task force includes legislators, arctic community leaders, and representatives of state and federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s crucial for Alaska to recognize the strategic importance of arctic waters.\u00a0 The areas off of Alaska\u2019s northern coast have some of the richest oil &amp; gas deposits in the arctic.\u00a0 As sea ice declines we will need to come to grips with potential arctic shipping routes.\u00a0 This summer saw a large increase in arctic passage including cargo ships, luxury yachts, and the first Russian supertanker carrying natural gas.\u00a0 This meeting featured presentations from the Coast Guard, NOAA, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arctic.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Arctic Research Commission<\/a>, Shell Exploration, and the White House Office of Science &amp; Technology.<\/p>\n<p>During this next year, the task force will meet in many of our Northern Waters communities.
