\"\"<\/a>I recently returned from the Energy Council\u2019s quarterly meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi.\u00a0\u00a0 The Energy Council is a legislative organization with representatives from 12 states, 6 provinces, and the country of Venezuela.\u00a0 Their conferences provide a great forum for discussing energy policy and an opportunity to introduce policy-makers to issues important to Alaska.<\/p>\n

The conference focused on the Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 It examined the gulf oil spill, spill response, and future policy implications resulting from the spill.\u00a0 Our group heard presentations from researchers, policy-experts from the Minerals Management Service, and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.\u00a0 As part of the conference I took a fly-over of the Mobile Bay and the deepwater production areas.\u00a0 I also toured shallow water production areas, on-shore processing facilities, and learned more about the Gulf Restoration Plan being implemented.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0

\nAlaska has one of the most prolific oil\u00a0& gas basins in North America.\u00a0 To best serve Alaskans, legislators need to have\u00a0broad perspective of energy production.\u00a0 I\u2019ve served on the Energy Council\u2019s executive committee for four years and consider legislators\u2019 work on the\u00a0council a\u00a0key part of our efforts to develop Alaska\u2019s energy resources.\u00a0 As our state works to advance exploration in Alaska\u2019s Outer Continental Shelf, it\u2019s important to study the accident in Gulf of Mexico and its policy implications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
