{"id":927,"date":"2010-09-01T18:04:39","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T02:04:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=927"},"modified":"2010-11-17T16:55:36","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T01:55:36","slug":"northern-waters-task-force-appointment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=927","title":{"rendered":"Northern Waters Task Force Appointment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I was<a href=\"http:\/\/housemajority.org\/item.php?id=hmaj20100823-793\"> appointed<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.housemajority.org\/coms\/index.php?c=104\">Alaska Northern Waters Task Force<\/a>. The Legislature created the Task Force this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.ak.us\/basis\/get_bill.asp?bill=HCR%2022&amp;session=26\">past session<\/a> in recognition of the urgent need to develop a comprehensive plan for the management of our Arctic waters and Alaska\u2019s surrounding coastal region. The loss of perennial sea ice is presenting our state with serious new challenges and forcing a comprehensive review of fundamental policies in the area of habitat management, resource development, marine navigation, economic development and even national security. The 11-member Task Force brings together local, state and federal officials in an effort to identify mutual areas of concern and our principal task is to investigate the feasibility of creating a joint commission for coordinating U.S. and Alaskan interests in northern waters.<\/p>\n<p>The first task force meeting has been scheduled for Oct 1<sup>st<\/sup> in Anchorage. I fully expect that we will have hearings in a number of the most directly impacted coastal communities, to include Barrow, Kotzebue, Nome, Bethel and Unalaska.
