{"id":924,"date":"2010-08-25T16:45:47","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T00:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=924"},"modified":"2010-11-17T16:54:28","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T01:54:28","slug":"international-conference-on-russian-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=924","title":{"rendered":"International Conference on Russian America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sitk\/index.htm\">Sitka National Historical Park<\/a> is celebrating its Centennial this year with an impressive series of events. One of the most important, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sitk\/anniversary-august-2010.htm\">2010 International Conference on Russian America<\/a>, just concluded this past week. Randy Larson, Dusty Kidd, Bob Medinger, Sandy Lorrigan and many others deserve a tremendous amount of credit for organizing this event and making it such a huge success.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2010-08-19-Russians-Coming.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2010-08-19-RussianAmer-Festival-Sitka.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1022\" title=\"2010 08 19 RussianAmer Festival Sitka\" src=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2010-08-19-RussianAmer-Festival-Sitka-274x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a>Co-sponsored by the National Park Service and the International Association of Specialists on Russian America, the week-long conference brought together an international group of over 150 scholars, historians, authors, scientists, curators and artists to celebrate Alaska\u2019s rich Russian American heritage. Seven countries were represented at the conference which included workshops, seminars, dissertations and on-site archeology. I was unable to attend the entire conference, but I did manage to sneak away for an interesting panel discussion on Russian explorer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aleksei_Chirikov\">Aleksei Chirikov<\/a> and was honored to welcome conference attendees at a dinner Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the conference, the &#8216;White Nights&#8217; Festival of Russian Culture was held Friday evening at Harrigan Centennial Hall. This is the first time this three year old festival has been held in Sitka and nearly 500 people turned out to enjoy a wonderful program of Russian music, song and dance.
