{"id":650,"date":"2010-04-18T20:00:05","date_gmt":"2010-04-19T04:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=650"},"modified":"2011-01-17T15:34:19","modified_gmt":"2011-01-18T00:34:19","slug":"petersburg-naming-bills-pass-the-legislature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=650","title":{"rendered":"Petersburg Naming Bills Pass the Legislature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The legislature has passed legislation naming public works in Petersburg after two well known citizens.\u00a0 On the recommendation of the City of Petersburg, I was proud to introduce these bills to recognize Alaskans who have made a contribution to their community and our region.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.ak.us\/basis\/get_bill.asp?bill=SB%20%2024&amp;session=26\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 24<\/a> names the bridge over Hammer Slough after Louis Miller. Arriving in Petersburg in 1901, Miller worked as a carpenter for town founder Peter Buschmann. He constructed some of the first houses on Hammer Slough and oversaw construction of the Sons of Norway Hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.ak.us\/basis\/get_bill.asp?bill=SB%20%2025&amp;session=26\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 25<\/a> names the South Mitkof Island Ferry Terminal after Richard \u2018Dewey\u2019 Duvall. \u201cDewey\u201d, as he was known to friends, was a longtime resident of Petersburg and was instrumental in the founding of the Inter-Island Ferry Authority (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.interislandferry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">IFA<\/a>).
