{"id":4792,"date":"2019-08-23T09:50:48","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T17:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=4792"},"modified":"2019-08-23T09:50:48","modified_gmt":"2019-08-23T17:50:48","slug":"legislature-toughens-crime-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=4792","title":{"rendered":"Legislature Toughens Crime Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alaska was named the \u201cMost Dangerous State in America\u201d after the passage of SB 91 <a href=\"http:\/\/2016 - Omnibus Crime Law &amp; Procedure, Corrections\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\">(2016 &#8211; Omnibus Crime Law &amp; Procedure, Corrections<\/a>) which weakened our criminal laws and the consequences for breaking drug trafficking laws. Trafficking in illegal drugs increased to the point where the entire state of Alaska was designated as a \u201cHigh Intensity Drug Trafficking Area\u201d by the Federal government. The Alaska State Troopers testified regarding the trafficking and concluded that the drug problem increased property and violent crimes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Department of Public Safety Crime in Alaska, 2017 Annual Report, Crime Clock, p.7:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Alaska, there is one murder every 6 days, one rape every 8 hours,<br \/>\none robbery every 9 hours, and one assault and one burglary every 2 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Governor Dunleavy introduced several bills at the beginning of the 31st Legislative Session to address our criminal laws and protect Alaskans.<\/p>\n<p>I am happy to report the Legislature strengthened our criminal laws and reduced the loopholes Alaskan\u2019s are dealing with today regarding the passage of SB 91 (2016). Specifically, the Legislature\u2019s version of the bill makes these key changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Possessing the most dangerous illegal drugs in Alaska would be a felony, this includes: heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.<\/li>\n<li>Misdemeanor sentences may impose meaningful jail time.<\/li>\n<li>Requires those convicted of the most serious crimes to serve more jail time on their sentence before being able to seek parole and early release from prison.
