{"id":2652,"date":"2013-01-24T10:02:54","date_gmt":"2013-01-24T19:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2652"},"modified":"2013-01-24T10:02:54","modified_gmt":"2013-01-24T19:02:54","slug":"whats-happening-in-the-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2652","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s Happening in the District"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alaska Workforce Investment Board Meets in Ketchikan<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m happy to announce that on January 23rd and 24th, the Alaska Workforce Investment Board (AWIB) will meet in Ketchikan for the first time ever.\u00a0 The AWIB advises the Governor regarding Alaska\u2019s career and technical education system needs in order to meet industry demand and provide quality employment opportunities for Alaskans.\u00a0 This is a great opportunity to provide the Board with a firsthand understanding of Southeast Alaska\u2019s employment trends and workforce needs.\u00a0 Ketchikan\u2019s AWIB members, Doug Ward, Terry Wanzer and Chas Edwardson deserve a big thank you for making this event possible.\u00a0 The meetings will be held in the Sunny Point Conference Center at the Best Western Landing Hotel.\u00a0 A complete agenda is available online at:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/labor.alaska.gov\/awib\/2013-jan-mtg-binder\/agenda.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/labor.alaska.gov\/awib\/2013-jan-mtg-binder\/agenda.pdf<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>NMFS Observer Program<\/strong><br \/>\nThe National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is currently implementing a restructured observer program for the small vessel fishing fleet between 40 and 57.5 feet, impacting around 1,400 community based vessels and their crews.\u00a0 Many of these fishermen are my constituents who shared their concerns with me.\u00a0 On their behalf I wrote a letter back in October to Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) detailing those concerns. Click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaskasenate.org\/stedman\/newsletters\/20121031_DrJaneLubchencoNMFSobserverprogram.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to see a copy of my letter and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaskasenate.org\/stedman\/newsletters\/20121221_ResponsefromUS_DOC_ObserverProgram.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to see NOAA\u2019s response.<br \/>\n<strong>Alaska Board of Game Meets in Sitka<\/strong><br \/>\nI was pleased to see that the Alaska Board of Game held their Southeast Region meeting in Sitka from January 11th \u2013 15th at Harrigan Centennial Hall.\u00a0 The board considered over 40 proposals regarding hunting and trapping regulations for the Southeast region.\u00a0 The meetings were open to the public and well attended.\u00a0 For more information about this and other Board of Game meetings, go to: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\/index.cfm?adfg=gameboard.meetinginfo\" target=\"_blank\">www.adfg.alaska.gov\/index.cfm?adfg=gameboard.meetinginfo<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>Greater Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce Award Ceremony<\/strong><br \/>\nOn January 12th, my staff attended the Greater Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Ceremony.\u00a0 Highlights included the following awards: Citizens of the Year, Jim and Connie Wingren; Business of the Year, Scanlon Gallery and Custom Framing; Entrepreneur of the Year, Creekside Family Health Clinic; Community Service of the Year, The Salvation Army; Youth Leader of the Year, Jim Meiresonne; Lifetime Recognition Award, Dorothy Benson (Dorothy passed away in December and her daughter Kay Simms accepted the award); Young Professional of the Year, Erica Caudill; and President\u2019s Award, Charley Starr. Thanks to the Greater Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce for promoting a healthy business climate and taking this opportunity to publicly recognize outstanding individuals and businesses in the community.\u00a0 Congratulations to all the award recipients.<br \/>\n<strong>Ketchikan Library Grand Opening<\/strong><\/p>\n<table width=\"400\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alaskasenate.org\/stedman\/newsletters\/012313_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Senator Stedman cutting the ribbon at the Ketchikan Public Library Grand Opening.
