{"id":2479,"date":"2012-06-08T13:46:54","date_gmt":"2012-06-08T21:46:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2479"},"modified":"2012-06-14T00:47:32","modified_gmt":"2012-06-14T08:47:32","slug":"sitka-public-safety-academy-graduation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2479","title":{"rendered":"Sitka Public Safety Academy Graduation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week I had the pleasure of addressing the graduating class of the Alaska Public Safety Academy in Sitka.\u00a0 I was honored to congratulate recruits on their accomplishments and thank them for stepping forward to serve Alaska.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-center aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/gallery\/senator-stedman\/img_0592.jpg\" alt=\"Sitka Public Safety Academy graduation ceremony\" width=\"516\" height=\"329\" \/><br \/>\nPublic safety is a major issue in Alaska.\u00a0 Our state faces serious social and substance abuse issues.\u00a0 Fortunately Alaska also has some of America\u2019s finest first-responders. It is the job of government to enforce the law, promote safe communities, and protect life and property.\u00a0 The recruits I met at the graduation ceremony are dedicated public safety professionals and they will be an asset to our state.\u00a0 I was especially glad to congratulate a recruit from the district I represent, Branden Forst from Sitka,\u00a0who will serve in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dps.alaska.gov\/AWT\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Wildlife Troopers<\/a>. (Photo below)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0608-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2504\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0608-Copy-277x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0608-Copy-277x300.jpg 277w, http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0608-Copy.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1974, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dps.state.ak.us\/ast\/academy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public Safety Academy <\/a>trains Alaskans from around the state to be State Troopers and law enforcement officers.\u00a0 The academy is vital to public safety in our state and an important institution for the Sitka community.\u00a0 I\u2019ve worked with colleagues and the Governor&#8217;s administration to ensure the academy has the resources to properly train and equip law enforcement.\u00a0 In the past three years we\u2019ve secured $8 million in funding to improve and expand academy facilities.\u00a0 This includes construction of an on-site dining facility and land for a public safety driving range adjacent to the academy.\u00a0 This constitutes the largest investment in the academy in a generation.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping Alaskans safe is a top priority.\u00a0 I\u2019m proud of this recent batch of graduates for their hard work and am confident their training has prepared them to face the responsibilities of law enforcement.\u00a0 My thanks to Commissioner Masters; Lieutenant James Helgoe, Academy Commander; and the rest of the Academy&#8217;s top-notch staff for their service to our state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week I had the pleasure of addressing the graduating class of the Alaska Public Safety Academy in Sitka.\u00a0 I was honored to congratulate recruits on their accomplishments and thank them for stepping forward to serve Alaska.
