{"id":2410,"date":"2012-05-21T14:57:35","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T22:57:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2410"},"modified":"2012-05-22T16:28:09","modified_gmt":"2012-05-23T00:28:09","slug":"little-norway-festival-in-petersburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2410","title":{"rendered":"Little Norway Festival in Petersburg"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">My family and I traveled to Petersburg last weekend for the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petersburg.org\/visitor\/littlenorway.html\" target=\"_blank\">Little Norway Festival<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">.\u00a0 This annual celebration honors the community\u2019s Norwegian heritage and is held over May 17, (<em>Syttende Mai), <\/em>Norway\u2019s Independence Day.\u00a0 People from across Alaska visit Petersburg for the festival, and it\u2019s a great showcase for the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Numerous events were held including a wooden boat regatta, traditional dances, a parade, and appearances by the Festival\u2019s famous Valkyries.\u00a0 The<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sofn.com\/home\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Sons of Norway<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333;\">Hall was a centerpiece of the festival and this year is celebrating its 100th anniversary.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_2417\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 444px; height: 295px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/IMG_2052.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2417    \" title=\"Walking in the parade alongside Petersburg Mayor Al Dwyer\" src=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/IMG_2052-1024x642.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I also attended the grand opening of the Petersburg Fire Station.\u00a0 The facility is first-rate and will enhance public safety in the region. You can see a video of the ribbon-cutting ceremony <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Mv_Ml9Xn6cs%20\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I grew up in Petersburg and enjoyed visiting friends and family during the festival.
