{"id":2384,"date":"2012-04-24T13:45:15","date_gmt":"2012-04-24T21:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2384"},"modified":"2012-04-25T08:18:03","modified_gmt":"2012-04-25T16:18:03","slug":"ketchikans-alaska-ship-drydock-will-design-alaska-class-ferry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=2384","title":{"rendered":"Ketchikan Shipyard Will Design Alaska Class Ferry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.state.ak.us\/amhs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Marine Highway System<\/a> (AMHS) announced today that Ketchikan-based <a href=\"http:\/\/vigorindustrial.com\/alaska-ship-drydock\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Ship and Drydock<\/a> (ASD) has been contracted to design the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.state.ak.us\/amhs\/alaska_class\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Class Ferry<\/a>. The Alaska Class Ferry project will modernize our state&#8217;s ferry system, serving shorter routes and allowing our fleet\u2019s larger vessels to run longer distances.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m pleased an Alaska company has been contracted to design the new ferry. ASD operates the Ketchikan Shipyard in partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aidea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Industrial Development Authority <\/a>(AIDEA).\u00a0 The contract will give the Ketchikan Shipyard first option to bid on constructing the vessel.\u00a0 This would be the first state ferry built in Alaska, and a major achievement for our state\u2019s ship-building industry.<\/p>\n<p>I thank the Governor and the Department of Transportation &amp; Public Facilities\u00a0for their decision, and for helping bolster a major industry for coastal Alaska.\u00a0 The Legislature worked with the Administration to secure $120 million for to construct the first Alaska Class Ferry.\u00a0 I will continue working with colleagues and the Governor to set aside funding for new vessels to make Alaska\u2019s marine transportation system more efficient.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) announced today that Ketchikan-based Alaska Ship and Drydock (ASD) has been contracted to design the Alaska Class Ferry.
