{"id":1609,"date":"2011-09-19T15:30:09","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T23:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=1609"},"modified":"2011-09-27T16:03:34","modified_gmt":"2011-09-28T00:03:34","slug":"alaska-class-ferry-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=1609","title":{"rendered":"Alaska Class Ferry Decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Shipyard-Tour1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1622\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Shipyard-Tour1-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a>The Alaska Department of Transportation &amp; Public Facilities <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.state.ak.us\/comm\/pressbox\/arch_2011\/PR11-2554.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that it has selected Alaska Ship &amp; Drydock\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.akship.net\/pages\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ketchikan Shipyard<\/a> to be the construction manager and general contractor for the Alaska Class Ferry project.\u00a0 This is great news for Southeast Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.state.ak.us\/amhs\/alaska_class\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Class Ferry<\/a> will be the next generation of vessels for the Alaska Marine Highway System.\u00a0 During the past several years I\u2019ve worked with colleagues and the administration to secure $120 million to construct the vessel and find a way for the Ketchikan Shipyard to have a role in the project.\u00a0 This announcement moves the project to the final design phase, and gives Alaska\u2019s in-state shipyard first option in negotiating a contract to construct the ferry.<\/p>\n<p>Expanding transportation and marine construction is key to economic growth in our region.\u00a0 The Alaska\u00a0 Class Ferry project will create over 200 jobs and show that Alaska\u2019s ferries can be built here in Southeast Alaska.\u00a0 As lead shipyard for the project, Ketchikan Shipyard will partner with DOT&amp;PF to complete the vessel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.state.ak.us\/amhs\/alaska_class\/preliminary.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">design<\/a> during the next 12 months and begin discussions on constructing the vessel.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to thank the Governor and the department for their decision, and also Randy Johnson and Doug Ward of Alaska Ship &amp; Drydock for their work on this project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Alaska Department of Transportation &amp; Public Facilities announced that it has selected Alaska Ship &amp; Drydock\u2019s Ketchikan Shipyard to be the construction manager and general contractor for the Alaska Class Ferry project.\u00a0 This is great news for Southeast Alaska.
