The Alaska Redistricting Board<\/a> released its draft reapportionment plan<\/a> this week. The board is charged under the Alaska Constitution<\/a> to reconfigure election districts every 10 years to reflect the federal census. The 2010 Census<\/a> reported Southeast\u2019s population at 71, 664, a 2% population decline since 2000.\u00a0\u00a0 The numbers also show that while the Southeast population\u00a0had decreased, other regions of Alaska are growing. During the past decade Alaska\u2019s population grew nearly 13%.<\/p>\n

These shifting demographics will lead to changes in our region\u2019s representation in the legislature and the shape of our electoral districts.\u00a0 The board has presented a draft plan for Southeast<\/a> and alternate<\/a> option.\u00a0 Both plans substantially alter current districts, going so far as to pair Ketchikan\u00a0and Delta Junction or Kodiak in the same Senate District.<\/p>\n

During the next two months the board will take testimony on the proposal before finalizing their\u00a0plan later this summer.\u00a0 Several public meetings are scheduled for Southeast including:<\/p>\n
