{"id":1457,"date":"2011-04-14T17:52:11","date_gmt":"2011-04-15T01:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=1457"},"modified":"2011-10-26T15:18:10","modified_gmt":"2011-10-26T23:18:10","slug":"legislature-expands-southeast-state-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/?p=1457","title":{"rendered":"Legislature Expands Southeast State Forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate passed legislation today that will expand the <a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/HB_105_Vicinity_Map1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Southeast State Forest<\/a> and improve resource management in our region.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.ak.us\/basis\/get_bill.asp?bill=HB%20105&amp;session=27\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 105<\/a> would add over 23,000 acres to the state forest and designate state lands for long-term forest management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Senator Stedman speaks on House Bill 105 Southeast State Forest\" width=\"345\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vQrXpwaj5ig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p.\n\nSoutheast Alaska\u2019s economy has changed significantly over the last 20 years.\u00a0 The decline in the forest products industry has been an economic disaster for our region.\u00a0 Since the termination of long-term federal timber contracts in the 1990s, it has been increasingly difficult a steady supply of timber from federal lands.\u00a0 The closure of pulp mills and local sawmills resulted in a 30% economic hit to Southeast that we still haven\u2019t recovered from.\u00a0 With the vast majority of land in Southeast Alaska being controlled by the federal government, it\u2019s important for the state to help sustain ensure suitable state lands remain a part of Alaska\u2019s timber base.\n\nThe bill incorporates 23 <a href=\"http:\/\/bertstedman.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/HB_105_Parcel_Maps_12.20.20101.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">parcels<\/a> across Southeast that have been selected by state foresters for active management.\u00a0 Expanding the state forest will ensure state land remains available for long-term forest management and will boost timber volumes.\u00a0 Lands in the state forest will continue to be open for multiple-uses including hunting, recreation, subsistence, and timber development.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate the extensive public-process that went into crafting the bill, and the support local communities and the Board of Forestry provided for passing the bill.\u00a0 I\u2019m confident establishing the forest will aide small town sawmills and improve forest management in our region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate passed legislation today that will expand the Southeast State Forest and improve resource management in our region.
